What It Does
Modifiers let golfers customize their orders with add-ons or options. Think of them as the "How would you like that cooked?" or "Add bacon for $2" choices that appear when a golfer taps on a menu item. You create modifier lists (like "Cooking Temperature" or "Extra Toppings"), add individual options to each list, set prices for add-ons, and control how many options a golfer must or can select.
How It Works (Step by Step)
- From the Course Detail page, navigate to the area where modifiers are managed (this may be within a revenue center or a dedicated "Modifiers" section in the sidebar). You see a list of all modifier lists that have been created for your course.
- To create a new modifier list, click the "Add Modifier List" button.
- Fill in the details: List Name (a label that describes the group of options, for example "Cooking Temperature" or "Bread Choice"), Minimum Selections (the fewest number of options the golfer must pick), and Maximum Selections (the most options the golfer can pick).
- Click Save to create the list.
- Now add options to the list. For each option, enter an Option Name (what the golfer sees, for example "Medium Rare") and a Price (additional cost for this option, enter 0 if there is no extra charge).
- Click Save after adding each option, or save them all at once if the form allows batch entry.
- Once your modifier list is ready, link it to menu items by editing the item and attaching the modifier list in the Modifiers section.
- To edit a modifier list or its options, click on it from the list and make changes.
- To remove a modifier list from an item, edit the item and detach the list.
What the User Sees
A list of modifier lists for your course, each showing the list name, the number of options in the list, min/max selection rules (for example, "Choose 1" or "Choose up to 3"), and which menu items the list is linked to.
- An "Add Modifier List" button to create a new list.
- When you click into a modifier list, you see the list settings, a table of options with their names and prices, buttons to add, edit, or remove individual options, and a section showing which items this modifier list is attached to.
- On the golfer's side in the app, modifiers appear as a selection screen after they tap "Add to Cart" on an item, showing the modifier list name as a heading, the options as tappable choices, and any extra prices displayed next to each option.
When Things Go Wrong
- Modifier list won't save: Make sure the list name is not empty. Check that the minimum selections number is not greater than the maximum.
- Golfers are forced to pick an option they do not want: Check the minimum selections setting. If the modifier is optional (for example, "Extra Toppings"), set the minimum to 0.
- Golfers cannot pick enough options: Increase the maximum selections number. For example, if golfers should be able to pick up to 3 toppings, set maximum to 3.
- Option price is not showing: Options with a price of $0 show no price tag, which is correct. If the option should have a charge, edit it and enter the price.
- Modifier does not appear on the item: The modifier list needs to be linked to the item. Edit the item and attach the modifier list in the Modifiers section.
- Deleted modifier still appears: There may be a caching delay. Wait a few minutes and check again. If it persists, verify the option was actually deleted and saved.
Tips and Gotchas
- "Choose 1" vs "Choose many" depends on your min/max settings. For a "Cooking Temperature" modifier where golfers must pick exactly one, set both minimum and maximum to 1. For "Extra Toppings" where they can pick up to 3, set minimum to 0 and maximum to 3.
- Use modifiers instead of creating duplicate items. Instead of separate items for "Small Coffee," "Medium Coffee," and "Large Coffee," create one "Coffee" item with a "Size" modifier list.
- Price add-ons are shown to golfers. If "Add Bacon" costs $2 extra, the golfer sees "+$2.00" next to that option. Make sure your add-on prices are accurate.
- Modifier lists can be shared across items. A "Cooking Temperature" list can be attached to your burger, your steak, and your chicken sandwich. Create the list once, then link it to multiple items.
- Keep option names short and clear. Golfers are choosing on a small phone screen. "Medium" is better than "Cooked to a warm pink center (medium)."
- Order of options matters. The first option in your list is the first one golfers see. Put the most popular or default option at the top.
- Zero-price options are free. If "No Onion" or "Extra Napkins" do not cost anything, set the price to 0. The golfer will see the option without a price tag.
- Test your modifiers. After setting them up, open the golfer app and try ordering the item yourself. Make sure the options look right and the prices add up correctly.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: What is the difference between a modifier list and a modifier option? A: A modifier list is the category (for example, "Bread Choice"). Modifier options are the individual choices within that category (for example, "White," "Wheat," "Sourdough"). You create the list first, then add options to it.
- Q: Can I require golfers to make a selection? A: Yes. Set the minimum selections to 1 (or more). The golfer will not be able to add the item to their cart until they pick at least that many options.
- Q: Can one item have multiple modifier lists? A: Absolutely. A burger might have a "Cooking Temperature" modifier (choose 1), a "Cheese Type" modifier (choose 1), and an "Extra Toppings" modifier (choose up to 3). Each is a separate modifier list attached to the same item.
- Q: If I change a modifier price, does it affect existing orders? A: No. Orders already placed keep the price that was in effect at the time. Only new orders use the updated price.
- Q: Can I reuse the same modifier list across different revenue centers? A: Modifier lists are typically available to attach to any item within the same course. If you create a "Cooking Temperature" list, you can link it to items in the Clubhouse Grill and the Turn Bar.
- Q: How do I remove a modifier list entirely? A: First, detach it from all items that use it. Then delete the modifier list from the Modifiers section. If any items still reference it, you will see a warning.
- Q: Is there a limit to how many options I can add to a list? A: There is no strict limit, but keep it practical. A list with 20 options is overwhelming for golfers. If you have that many, consider splitting into smaller, more focused lists.
- Q: What happens if I set minimum and maximum to the same number? A: The golfer must pick exactly that many. For example, minimum 2 and maximum 2 means "Choose exactly 2 options." This is useful for combo-style choices like "Pick 2 sides."
